Joan lives and works in the Scottish Borders. ” In both my landscapes and still life paintings I aim to conjure up a certain mood or atmosphere. My paintings may contain many layers- certain colours or textures of previous layers can often be spotted in the paintings. I don’t aim to slavishly copy a view or still life set up. My work is more intuitive and experimental. In many cases it is inspired by the act of painting itself. In my still life paintings I hope to involve the viewer in the relationship between the objects. I choose not to include figures- it is as though someone has just left the room and the objects have taken on their own dynamic” .
